Puffin class Spring term 1

Welcome to Puffin Class! Our teachers are Mrs Hafford and Mrs Weston. Our Nursery Nurse is Mrs Goodman. 

Our topic for this half term is 'We live in England'.

Important information for all of Puffin class

We have PE on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Every week the children will bring home two reading books, their reading diary and their sound books. The sound books will have the sounds that they will be learning the following week so they can practise them at home as they learn them in school. These books will be changed on a Friday but the children need to bring their zip wallets, with reading books and diaries, into school everyday as they may read to an adult in school. We encourage all children to read daily at hometo an adult, where possible, as regular reading builds up fluency. The children also need to practise the words on their word cards and bookmarks daily too.

Everyday the children must bring in their water bottle filled with water only please.

 

We will read many different texts in our class. Here are a few of them that we will enjoy in the this half term:

Whole class theme - We live in England

This term our theme based learning will develop our knowledge about 'We live in England'. We will be learning about the four countries that make up the UK. We will also be locating the capital cities and other main towns and cities. We will also make sure we can tell people our address. We will learn about London, including some of the famous landmarks. We will also learn about our queen, Queen Elizabeth II.

RECEPTION

Fine motor control

The children have worked really hard in the Autumn term to develop their fine motor control. This will continue throughout the next term too. The children will have opportunities to strengthen their fingers using dough. We will encourage them to fasten their own buttons on polo shirts and cardigans and to do up their own zips on their coats. If they have shoes with laces this may be a good opportunity to begin learning how to tie their shoelaces! A challenge I know!

English - Reception Spring term

The children have made an excellent start to their phonics lessons and have completed Phase 2 of Letters and Sounds. We are now working our way through Phase 3 which involves learning digraphs and trigraphs. We have a new set of tricky words to learn to read and spell. Look out for a Phase 3 bookmark which will be sent out in your child's reading diary in January. As before, please ensure that the children practise these words daily.

In addition to this, we will enjoy reading texts together and talking about the events and characters in them. We will also talk about if we like them or not and why. We will encourage mark making in different forms throughout our continuous provision. We will continue working on our letter formation.

Attached are the objectives the children will work through and the Early Learning Goal they will strive to achieve by the end of their Reception Year for Reading and Writing.

Imagination Library books

This month children born in 2015 should have received the story We're all wonders and children born in 2016, Dolly Parton Coat of many colours. We hope you are enjoying reading these books. Here are some ideas to accompany the stories. We'd love to know if you try any of them out.

YEAR 1

Maths - Year 1 Autumn

Each maths lesson will begin with Big Maths which teaches number work and mental recall of number facts. For our maths lessons we follow the White Rose scheme of work. The objectives that the children are aiming to achieve by the end of Year 1 are attached below. In the first half of the Spring term children will be adding numbers up to 20 by counting on, learning their numbers to 20, subtracting (not crossing 10 then crossing 10), counting to 50, comparing and ordering numbers to 50 and continuing learning one more and one less than given numbers.

English - Year 1 Spring term

We have a daily English session, which incoporates writing and SPAG (spelling, punctuation and grammar).  We also have a daily phonics lesson and guided reading once a week.
